It’s pretty safe to say that last year’s movie choices were not as ecstatic as people thought they would be. Sure, there were some good movies released last year, but compared to previous years, there weren’t as many well known movies. However, this year is a completely different story, where additions of existing popular franchises are coming to theaters along with new movies that will, if not already, shatter the box office. So instead of talking about the effect of the upcoming movies, it’d be better to showcase these upcoming movies so you know what to look out for in theaters in the coming months.
First on this list is a movie that’s already out in theaters, has already shaken the box office, and received glorious reviews: Project Hail Mary. This movie stars Ryan Gosling, who plays a school teacher named Ryland Grace with a doctorate in molecular biology, who is sent on a suicide mission to find the solution to a world ending problem involving the diminishing of the sun. On his mission, though, Grace encounters something that wasn’t a part of his plan that may help not only his mission, but someone else’s as well. Project Hail Mary is an action packed movie with stunning visuals and a beautiful story that brings out all of your emotions. There is not a doubt in my mind that this movie will be nominated for multiple awards for its glory. For even more information about this movie, check out Christian Marquez’s article.
Next on this list is a movie that is coming out later this month, and has been highly anticipated by a large community, Backrooms. This movie follows a man who discovers a supernatural gateway to a subliminal world and seeks to uncover the secrets it holds. What he doesn’t know is that beyond the pale yellow walls of this region lies a darkness that should have been left alone. Backrooms is directed by Kane Parsons, the original creator of the Backrooms Found Footage videos on youtube, where it originally took off in 2022. Backrooms is a horror film and may only appeal to those with a certain taste of subliminal/found footage characteristics or people who are familiar with the youtube videos made by Kane.
The next film on this list is one that comes from a very popular director, Christopher Nolan. It’s been a hot minute since Nolan has released a film, but this year he’s releasing The Odyssey. This movie follows a very well-known story which focuses on a man named Odysseus and his journey home after the conclusion of the Trojan war. There may be many who are unfamiliar with this story, however, it’s commonly referred to as THE story or the greatest tale ever told, practically paving the way for each story you see nowadays that involves the journey of a hero and adventure. Some popular films that have been influenced by The Odyssey include The Lord of the Rings, The Hunger Games, and Labyrinth. There’s not much more I can say about this besides the fact that once this movie hits theaters, I would HIGHLY recommend seeing it on the big screen, you won’t regret it.
Next on the list is Spider-man Brand New Day. Ever since the trailer dropped it has been one of the most heavily anticipated movies of 2026. Its forerunner, Spider-man No Way Home, which came out in 2021 with an insanely high rating, left the Marvel community chasing that high ever since, so that’s where this movie comes in. Spider-man Brand New Day stars actors like Tom Holland, Zendaya, and Sadie Sink. Spider-man Brand New Day follows Peter Parker who is committed to protecting the city of New York, though with the increasingly higher rates of crime Peter Parker goes through immense physical transformations which people have speculated may be a reference to the comic character known as Man Spider. Personally I am extremely excited for this movie and will be seeing it when it comes out in theaters.
Next on the list is Avenger’s Doomsday. According to IMDb and Letterboxd this is one of, if not the most anticipated movie of 2026, and if not then it’s one of the most awaited movies by Marvel fans. Avenger’s Doomsday, the sequel to Avengers: Endgame follows the avengers, X-men, and the Fantastic Four to fight a significant enemy starring actors like Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, and Ian McKellen. Avenger’s Doomsday is heavily influenced and inspired by the 1984 comic book series known as Secret Wars by Jim Shooter and Mike Zeck and it is very apparent by the story line that we know of so far. As I see it this is definitely one of the coolest movie drops this year, as it is a great addition to the Multiverse Saga.
Last but seriously not least, Dune: Part Three. Directed by Denis Villeneuve, this movie has been anticipated since part two came out. People loved the first and second movie so much that if they didn’t make a third then the populace would never be satisfied. Dune: Part Three follows Dune: Part Two about 20 years later with tales of a tragic love story and our main character having to balance absolute power and the foes that come with said power. This movie stars actors like Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, and Jason Momoa. Out of every movie on this list this is probably the movie I have been looking forward to the most, as a long time Dune fan I think this movie is going to break the box office.
