Spirit Week is a time to show off school spirit as the days lead up to the battle of the classes, or as MacDonald calls it, the battle of the condors (BOTC). Spirit Week and its themes are often centered around staff and students dressing a certain way to fit the daily theme. The week of March 2nd through March 6th was MacDonald’s most recent Spirit Week. Here’s a recap of the day’s themes and the outfits people wore.
Monday, March 2nd, was Country vs Country Club day, where participants either dressed country– such as cowboys, farmers, and sheriffs– or country club– dressing in a classy-sporty way.
Tuesday, March 3rd, was Tropical Tuesday. Participants wore outfits that reminded them of tropical settings, such as swimwear, floral leis, or Hawaiian-style shirts. Sophomores Eileya Delp-Kullock and Joey Depew both showed up to school looking beach-ready, with Depew saying “I want to be spirited for spirit week.” Delp-Kullock added to that sentiment of wanting to be on theme, saying “I want to support my sophomore class.”

Wednesday, March 4th, was Meme Day. Participants were encouraged to wear references to internet memes.
Sophomores Sylvia Huszarik and Audrey Maciel dressed as iconic internet references. Maciel is dressed as a meme of a guy driving past a road sign reading ‘road work ahead’ before jokingly saying ‘yeah, I sure hope it does’. She said “I dressed like this because it was really easy and I was able to do it quickly.” Huszarik, being a self-proclaimed “chill guy”, dressed as the chill guy meme, and said “I wanted to participate in spirit week.”

Thursday, March 5th, was Y2K Day, where the theme was to dress in the year-2000 or young-2000 style. Junior
Selena Santana and Sophomore Kenley Davis showed their spirit by dressing in their interpretations of the Y2K style. Santana sported around a baby blue sweat suit while Davis wore a more hippie-inspired fit.

Friday, March 6th, was the day of BOTC. Each class year has its own assigned color to show their support during the
event, so the theme was to dress in that color. For the 2025-2026 school year, freshmen are purple, sophomores are yellow, juniors are green, and seniors are blue. The theme being centered around your class year meant that students were the target audience more than staff, but teachers were still encouraged to wear colors or black to stay neutral. Junior Alexandria Barredo, a participant in the BOTC events, said “I’m wearing the BOTC shirt with the collar cut off … and I have it partially tucked [in] to a pair of jeans.” If you were to walk about the campus on this spirit day, you would see many BOTC shirts cropped, cut, signed, and designed to each person’s liking. “That’s what makes the shirts so great, they’re so easy to customize,” Barredo added.

Spirit Week is the perfect opportunity for students to open up and try new styles or outfits they would otherwise be hesitant to wear. Here at MacDonald, it’s an especially prominent time of the year. These sorts of opportunities encourage creativity and uniqueness amongst the students.
