As McDonald High School’s baseball program has a very bright future with the first graduating class, sophomore players Xavier Segovia and Aidan Tran shared their thoughts on what’s next for the team’s future.
Segovia, who describes himself as laid-back, focused, and a hard worker, said he believes these younger athletes are still growing and learning, and they will be the backbone of a stronger, more competitive team in the years to come.
Tran agreed, said “the freshman class has a lot of potential and could help the team win more games as they gain experience and confidence.” But both players emphasized that talent alone isn’t enough.
Segovia said, “Mental toughness and passion are just as important. Staying focused and keeping a positive attitude, even when the team is down, can make a huge difference.”
Tran said, “Consistency is a challenge for some players, and staying locked in during practices and outside of practice has been a struggle.”
Building team chemistry will make a huge impact on the team. Tran said, “Putting in work outside of school will make drastic improvements because of extra reps and practice.”
Coaching also plays a huge role in the team’s future. Both Segovia and Tran stressed that having coaches who are consistent and guide players to improve can make a huge difference in the team’s future.
Tran also highlighted the importance of fundamentals, stating that reducing errors and practicing basic skills, such as playing catch, can make big improvements.
Despite the challenges, both players are optimistic. They see a program with room to grow and develop over time, a group of young athletes ready to step up and take accountability, and the potential for MacDonald High is incredible and becoming stronger every day.
