Track & Field is a sport that involves running, jumping, and throwing events. The events include track events, such as sprints, hurdles, distance, as well as field events, including long/triple jump, high jump, pole vault, and throws. Track begins at schools every spring and practice is every day from 4:00 P.M. to 5:30 P.M. Sprinters go to the track, throwers go to the throwing fields, and jumpers go to the jumping pits.
With the season almost coming to an end, the KMHS Track & Field team has been working hard during practices and meets, slowly improving their personal bests each and every session.
Jhayde Domingo, a Junior, and Treyvon Vinson, a Senior, are two of KMHS’s best track athletes. Vinson joined the sport before his arrival to KMHS. Track & Field was actually one of the first sports he ever participated in.
“My history teacher was a track and field coach and he did happen to see me and my friends playing tag. He recommended we join track and field so all of us decided to give it a try,” Vinson said.
He then tried out for Track & Field and he really liked it.
“You know, track is one of my favorite sports. Sports in general are always a great way to connect with people,” Vinson said.
Vinson thinks you should work hard in track.
“Consistency and showing up for yourself is one of the most important things not just in track but for any sport.” Vinson said.
Jhayde Domingo is a sprinter. He runs the 4×100 relay, 100m, and 200m. Domingo also thinks that people should all work hard when it comes to track.
“I think it’s important to work hard in the end. It’s you against yourself with your PR and it’s a really good mindset to have,” said Domingo.
He also thinks we can make a lot of friends in any sport.
“…[T]rack is one of my favorite sports…[because it is] always a great way to connect with people,” said Domingo.
Additionally, he thinks trying a sport out is a great idea to put yourself out there.
“Try a sport or club out in high school. It’s a really good experience and you get to meet a lot of new people, some who become your lifelong friends after high school and even throughout college,” said Domingo.
Domingo plans on pursuing his education either in a community college or a four-year. He hopes to get a scholarship to run D2 track.
No matter which school you attend, Domingo and Vinson encourage you to give sports a try. You never know what kind of people you will meet and how much those experiences will positively impact your life for years to come.
