At Kathleen MacDonald High School, the AVID elective is helping students prepare for college and build academic and personal skills. Through collaboration, career exploration, structured support, and guidance from mentors, students are able to grow in those skills.
Sofia Medina, a Junior, who has been in the program for nearly three years said, “I think everyone and anyone benefits from AVID.”
The class provides structure and support throughout high school, especially when coursework becomes overwhelming.
“It gives you a base to start and guide you through high school,” Medina said.
Medina said AVID also helps students explore future career and college options through research opportunities and field trips.
“I think my opportunities have increased and so have my grades,” she said.

Tatiana Rueda, a Senior who’s also in the program said, “My favorite thing about being in AVID is the support system that comes with it.”
The class creates a space where students can ask questions, collaborate, problem-solve, and improve their academic skills without feeling judged.
“It has helped me reach out to new people for help with classwork,” she said.
English and AVID teacher Laura Hallinan focuses on teaching students how to learn through organization, critical thinking, and collaboration.
“This critical thinking and questioning supports academics,” she said.
Tutorials are a key part of the class, where students work together to solve problems from other classes.
“We also brainstorm and write most of our application essays so that we can revise them before applying,” she said.
Hallinan said AVID helps students build confidence and prepare for life after high school. She said the program gives students time to explore colleges, personal goals, careers, or any interests so they can make informed decisions about their future.
AVID continues to serve as a support system for students navigating high school, offering academic help, peer collaboration, research opportunities, and early preparation for college and careers.
